How it works
- Add everyone on the trip.
- Add each payment: who paid, how much, and who it was for. Tick “Different shares” when it wasn't equal, for example 2 shares for a couple and 1 for everyone else.
- Each person's balance is what they paid minus their share. Whoever is owed money gets it from whoever owes, in a short list of payments.
The payments are found by repeatedly matching the person who owes the most with the person owed the most, the same method Kwitsy groups use. It never needs more than one payment fewer than the number of people, though it isn't guaranteed to be the smallest possible number. Money is counted in whole cents, so balances always add up to zero exactly.
Questions
How do you split trip costs fairly?
Add every shared cost with who paid it and who it was for. Each person's fair share is the sum of their part of every cost; the difference from what they actually paid is what they owe or get back.
What if someone skipped a dinner or an activity?
Untick them under "Split between" for that payment, and it's shared only by the people who were there.
Can I use more than one currency?
This calculator uses one currency to stay simple. In a free Kwitsy group each cost can have its own currency, with daily reference rates where they're available.
Is my data saved or sent anywhere?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to a server. Only your currency choice is remembered on your device.
