Split expenses with roommates, from move-in to move-out
Whether you call it a flatshare, a WG or a república, the costs are the same: rent, bills that come back every month, groceries, and someone who always pays the cleaner. Here's a simple way to keep it fair, in Kwitsy or any other way you track it.
1. Set up the flat once
- Make one group for the home and add everyone by name. Share the invite link; each person claims their name, with or without an account.
- Agree on a default split: equal, or by room size (for example shares of 3 : 2 : 2). New expenses start with it, and you can still change any one expense. More on uneven rent in splitting rent when rooms differ.
- A couple sharing a room? Make them a household: they settle up as one (“Ann & Ben pay Cat”), while each person's own history stays the same.
2. Let the recurring bills add themselves
- Add rent, internet or a streaming plan once and set it to repeat: weekly, monthly, every 2 months or any interval.
- For bills that change (electricity, water, gas), Kwitsy reminds you to enter the new amount when it's due.
- End a repeat on a date or after a number of times, for example when the lease ends.
3. Groceries and shared supplies
Two ways work well. Either whoever shops adds the receipt (scan it, or split it item by item when not everything is shared), or you start a shared pot: everyone pays in, and groceries and cleaning supplies are paid from it, with the amount left always visible.
4. Settle up regularly, the way you already pay
- Kwitsy combines what everyone owes into fewer payments, so a flat of four rarely needs more than a few transfers.
- Add how you like to be paid and the payment opens ready to go: UPI in India, a Pix QR code in Brazil, a bank-transfer QR code for euro IBANs (it scans best with banks in Germany, Austria and Belgium), or Venmo and PayPal links. Bizum, MB WAY and Wero numbers can be copied.
- Turn on a weekly reminder and Kwitsy nudges anyone who owes money every Monday, so nobody has to ask.
5. Someone moves in or out
- New flatmate: add them to the group; Kwitsy can add them to earlier expenses they should share, like this month's internet.
- Moving out: mark them as moved out. They stay in the balances until they've settled, but aren't added to new bills. Once they're square, they can leave the group; their past expenses stay.
- Need a record for the deposit or the landlord? Export the group as a spreadsheet at any time.
Questions
What's the fairest way to split household bills with roommates?
Agree once and write it down: equal for shared things like internet and cleaning, and by room size (shares or percentages) for rent if rooms differ. In Kwitsy, save that as the group's default split so every new bill starts that way.
How do we handle bills that change every month?
Set them to repeat. For amounts that change, like electricity, Kwitsy asks for the new amount when it's due instead of copying last month's.
What happens when a roommate moves out?
Mark them as moved out: they stay in the balances until they've settled up, but aren't added to new bills. After that they can leave the group, and their past expenses stay.
Does everyone need to download an app?
No. Flatmates can join from the invite link in any browser, as guests, without an account. There's also an Android app on Google Play.
Is it free for a whole flat?
Yes. No ads and no limit on how many expenses you add, however many people live there.
