How to split bills with friends fairly
Most arguments about money between friends aren't about the amount, they're about the method. Pick the right way to split each bill, write it down when it happens, and settle up in as few payments as you can.
Four ways to split, and when each is fair
Equally
Best when everyone shared roughly the same: a taxi, a house rental, a pizza for the table. €100 between three people is €33.34, €33.33 and €33.33; someone gets the extra cent, and Kwitsy shows who (“Why these amounts?”).
By shares
Best when people used different amounts of the same thing. A cabin for 4 nights where one friend stayed 2: split 2 : 4 : 4 : 4. A couple can count as 2 shares and a single friend as 1.
By exact amounts or percentages
Best when you already know each person's part: rent of 60/40, or concert tickets at different prices. The parts always have to add up to the total, and Kwitsy checks that for you.
Item by item
Best for restaurant bills where one person had a salad and another had steak and wine. Everyone picks what they had; shared dishes are split between whoever shared them, and tax and tip are shared in proportion. In Kwitsy, scan the receipt and share a link so everyone taps their own items on their phone.
Habits that keep it friendly
- Add the expense when it happens, with who paid. Memory is the first thing to go after a weekend away.
- Agree on the method before the bill arrives, especially for big costs like a rental or flights.
- Keep one group per circle (the flat, the trip, the climbing crew), and split one-off things with one friend directly (Friends → their name → “Split with …”).
- Settle up regularly. Small balances are easy to pay; big ones linger.
Settle up with fewer payments
If Ana owes Ben and Ben owes Cat, Ana can pay Cat directly. Kwitsy does this across the whole group, so everyone is square in as few payments as possible. Each payment opens with the amount filled in where the app allows it (UPI, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, Monzo, Pix, or a bank-transfer QR code for euro IBANs), and you mark it as paid. Kwitsy never moves the money.
Questions
What's the fairest way to split a bill with friends?
Equal when everyone shared about the same, shares when people used different amounts of the same thing, exact amounts when you know each person's part, and item by item for restaurant bills where people ordered differently.
How do you split a restaurant bill when people ordered different things?
Split it item by item: each person picks what they had, shared dishes are divided between the people who shared them, and tax and tip are shared in proportion to each person's items.
How do we pay each other back with the fewest transfers?
Combine what everyone owes across the group: if Ana owes Ben and Ben owes Cat, Ana pays Cat directly. Kwitsy works this out for the whole group.
Do my friends need the app?
No. They can open a group's invite link in any browser and join as guests, without making an account.
Is Kwitsy free?
Yes. No ads, no limit on how many expenses you add, and your data is never sold.
