Help
Quick answers, in plain words. Still stuck? Email contact@kwitsy.com — we reply within 2 working days.
I didn't get the sign-in email
Kwitsy doesn't use passwords: we email you a link that signs you in. Wait a minute, check Spam, Junk or Promotions, and check the address you typed. Each link works once, within 15 minutes.
- Check Spam, Junk or Promotions. Search for “Kwitsy”. If it's there, mark it “Not spam” so the next one arrives normally.
- Check the address. One typo sends the link somewhere else. Go back and try again.
- Every link works once, within 15 minutes. Asked twice? Either link works, as long as it hasn't been used and is less than 15 minutes old.
- Open it on the same device. The link signs in whichever phone or computer opens it.
- Asked many times? For safety, after 3 requests in 15 minutes (or 30 in a day) we stop sending links to that address for a while. Wait up to 15 minutes and try once more.
- Use Google instead, if your Google account has the same email: “Continue with Google” on the sign-in page.
Joining a group from a link
Open the invite link or scan the QR code someone shared. Join with your email so you can come back from any device, or, if the group allows it, as a guest straight away.
- Who sees your email? Only the group's owner can see members' email addresses (to manage the group). Other members see names only.
- “This invite has expired”? Invite links last 30 days, and stop working if the owner makes a new one or the group is archived. Ask whoever sent it for a fresh one.
- “Someone is already using this name here”? That spot is taken on another device. If it's you, sign in on the device you used before, or ask the group owner to free it up.
Adding people to a group
In the group's settings, open “Invite people” and use “Add someone”. People you already share a group with appear as you type (or as soon as you tap the name field): tap one and they're added with their account straight away. Anyone else is added by name, and joins from the invite link.
- Typed a name you already know? If you add “Ben” by name while the Ben you share a group with is right there, Kwitsy asks “Did you mean Ben?” so you don't end up with two Bens.
- Their email works too: type the whole address in the name field, and if it's someone you already share a group with, they're suggested by name (the address itself is never shown).
- Someone who hasn't joined Kwitsy is added by name. If you add their email, their spot links to their account when they join with it (“Links to … when they join”). Kwitsy emails them one invitation with the join link (at most one a day and three in total per address, with a link to stop them), and you can also send it yourself by text or WhatsApp with the buttons that appear.
- Added to a group you didn't expect? You get a notification saying who added you, with a link to leave the group. If Mom joins Kwitsy from another group, Kwitsy offers to switch her spot to her account; nothing moves on its own.
- Invite by text or WhatsApp: “Send invite by text”, “Send on WhatsApp” and “Copy invite message” open your own apps with the invite link filled in. A phone number you type is only used on your device to fill in those links; Kwitsy doesn't keep it.
- From your contacts: on Android, “From contacts” opens your phone's contact list. Anywhere else, use “Import contacts file” (see below).
Adding people from your contacts
On Android, tap “From contacts” in “Add someone” and pick people. On any other device, export your contacts to a file, then tap “Import contacts file” and tick who to add. The file is read on your device and never uploaded; only the people you tick are added.
- Google Contacts (contacts.google.com): select the people, then “Export” and choose “vCard (for iOS Contacts)” or “Google CSV”.
- iPhone: in Contacts, open a contact (or select several on a Mac), tap “Share Contact” and save it to Files.
- Outlook: People, then “Manage contacts” → “Export contacts” (a CSV file).
- Then tap “Import contacts file”, search and tick who to add. Someone you already share a group with is added with their account; anyone else is added by name (with their email, so it links to their account when they join), and you can text them the invite link.
“My name is already in the group”
People can be added by name before they join. When you open the invite link, pick your name from the list to claim that spot: everything already added for you becomes yours, and your balance carries over.
Using Kwitsy as a guest
If the group allows guests. Anyone with its invite link can join without an account and add expenses. A guest spot works on the device you joined from; make an account to keep it everywhere.
- One device. Your guest spot lives in the browser you joined from. On another phone or computer, you'd be a stranger.
- Keep it everywhere: tap “Save with an account” at the top. Everything added for your guest name moves to your account.
- Trying the demo? The button says “Start your own group” instead. Demo changes aren't copied: your account starts fresh, and the demo is deleted after a day.
- Deleting: guests can only delete expenses they added. Ask someone with an account to remove anything else.
- Quick add needs a free account, because it reads your sentence with AI.
- The group owner can turn guests off and sign guests out at any time.
How splitting works
Split equally, by exact amounts, percentages or shares, or item by item from a receipt. Kwitsy works in exact cents, so the shares always add up to the total.
- Equally between the people you tick. €100 between three is €33.34, €33.33 and €33.33, and “Why these amounts?” on any expense shows who got the extra cent.
- Exact amounts, Percentages or Shares (for example rent 60/40, or “2 shares for the couple”).
- Itemize from a receipt: everyone picks what they had; tax and tip are shared in proportion.
- Quick add: type “80 for drinks with Dave and Ana, Dave paid” and tap “Fill in”. Check the form, then save.
Scanning and forwarding receipts
On Add expense, tap “Add & scan receipt” and Kwitsy fills in the shop, total and items for you to check. Or forward a receipt to the group's own email address.
- Scan: take a photo, pick one from your library, or choose a PDF. Check what Kwitsy filled in, then save.
- Forward: each group has its own email address (Group settings → “Email receipts to this group”). Forward a receipt from the address you sign in with and it appears on the group page, ready to check and add. Receipts written in the email itself (rides, deliveries, online orders) work too.
- Limits: scanning and Quick add have a daily limit per person. At busy times Kwitsy's AI helpers can also take a break, and you'll see “Kwitsy's AI helpers are resting”. Nothing is lost: fill in the form by hand, or try again tomorrow.
- Receipt files are private: only people in the group can open them.
Spending in several currencies
Pick the currency on each expense. For currencies with a published daily reference rate, Kwitsy automatically uses the rate for the expense's date. For others, type the rate yourself or keep the balance in its own currency.
- Automatic rates come from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates, which cover the big ones: euro, US dollar, pound, rupee, yen and about 25 more. Kwitsy uses the rate for the expense's date, so it never moves later.
- Other currencies (the UAE dirham or Vietnamese dong, for example) have no daily reference rate. Type the rate on the expense, or leave it blank and that money stays in its own currency.
- On the group page, “Show all in …” converts every balance into the group's currency; “Show each currency” shows them separately.
Edit, delete or undo an expense
Open the expense and tap “Edit” or “Delete”. Deleting is never final: tap “Put it back” straight away, or open the expense later and tap “Restore”.
- Just added the wrong thing? Tap “Undo” on the confirmation. Changed your mind again? “Put it back”.
- Restore later: find the expense in Activity, open it and tap “Restore”. Balances update straight away.
- History: every expense keeps a History of who added and changed it, on its page.
- Who can change expenses: by default, anyone in the group can edit or delete any expense. The owner can switch this in Group settings → “Who can change expenses” → “Only the person who added it”. Then only whoever added an expense, or the owner, can change it.
- Guests can only delete expenses they added.
- Payments have “Fix this payment” for the amount, date or note.
Repeating bills
When you add an expense, open “More options” and pick how often it repeats. Kwitsy adds it again automatically, with the same people and split.
- Every week, every 2 weeks, every month or every year, and it can end on a date or after a number of times.
- Bills that change, like electricity: tick “Amount changes each time”. When it's due, it shows under “Bills to enter” on the group page. Tap “Enter amount”, or “Skip this time”.
- Kwitsy may ask “Does this repeat every month?” after you add something that looks like a bill. “Yes, repeat it” is all it takes; ignoring it changes nothing.
- Change or stop it from the expense: “Change how it repeats” or “Stop repeating”. Copies already added stay.
The Android app, iPhone and offline
Kwitsy works in any browser, or get the Android app on Google Play. On iPhone, add it to your home screen. Expenses you add without a connection are kept on your phone and sent when you're back online.
- Android: install Kwitsy from Google Play, then sign in with the same email as on the web.
Android app on Google Play - iPhone: open kwitsy.com in Safari, tap Share → “Add to Home Screen”, then open Kwitsy from your home screen.
- Any browser: just go to kwitsy.com on your phone or computer. Nothing to install.
- Needs a connection: letting everyone pick their items from a receipt, scanning, and Quick add.
Settling up
Open Settle up to see who pays whom. Pay each other however you like, then tap “Mark as paid”. Kwitsy never moves money itself.
- Fewer payments: Kwitsy combines what everyone owes into fewer payments, unless the owner turned off “Settle with fewer payments” in Group settings. Then everyone pays back the person who paid for them.
- Pay any way: cash, bank transfer, UPI, Venmo, PayPal, Pix… Add your payment handles in Account (“Get paid faster”) so friends get a one-tap link or QR code to pay you (see ways to get paid back).
- Paid outside the plan? “Record a payment” works for any amount.
Ways to get paid back
Add how you'd like to be paid in Account (“Get paid faster”). On Settle up, the people who owe you see only the ways that work in that currency, with the amount filled in where the app allows it. Kwitsy never moves money itself.
- Bank transfer (euros): add your IBAN and the account holder's name (your bank checks it). People who owe you get a QR code their banking app scans (the EPC “GiroCode”), plus buttons to copy the IBAN and the amount when paying from the same phone. It works best with banks in Germany, Austria and Belgium; some banks elsewhere don't scan it yet.
- Pix (reais): add your Pix key (CPF, CNPJ, phone, email or random key; phone keys start with +55). People who owe you get a Pix QR code and a “Copia e Cola” code with the amount in it.
- Links with the amount filled in: Venmo, PayPal, UPI, Cash App and Monzo. On a computer, UPI shows a QR code to scan with your phone. Revolut opens your profile; the payer types the amount.
- Copy only: Zelle, Bizum, MB WAY, Wero and CLABE have no public pay links, so people copy your number into their bank app. For Tikkie, paste your own Tikkie link and it opens for them.
- Who sees your bank details: anyone who currently owes you in a group can tap to see your bank details on Settle up; you're told when someone looks (once a day per person), and there's a daily limit. Guests never can. That covers your IBAN, Pix key, CLABE, Bizum, MB WAY and Wero numbers and Tikkie link. Everywhere else they're masked (DE89 •••• 3000), and they're never in group exports, notifications or emails (your own data download has them: they're yours).
- Changed your bank details? Your shared groups see “… changed their payment details”, and the new details show to them a day later (the old ones are hidden meanwhile). That pause protects everyone if someone else ever gets into your account: you get an email, and there's time to change it back.
Balances look wrong?
Every balance is what you paid minus your share, counting payments between people. Open any expense and tap “Why these amounts?” to see exactly how it was split.
- See what changed: each expense has a History, and Activity shows every change in the group.
- A payment recorded twice? Open the extra one and tap “Delete” (you can restore it afterwards). If it was recorded in several groups at once, “Undo all” removes them together.
- Other currencies: each expense uses the rate locked on its own date. An expense with no rate yet stays in its own currency until you add one, so totals can look off. Edit it to add a rate.
- Someone listed twice? The owner can merge the extra spot in Group settings → “Someone listed twice?”. Nobody's balance changes.
- Get a second opinion: Group settings → “Read-only link” → “Create read-only link”. Anyone can open it to see every expense and check that the balances add up. It can't change anything, and you can turn it off any time.
Reminders and notifications
Nudge someone with “Remind” in Settle up, or “Remind all” on the group page. Choose what you hear about in Account, and mute any group you like.
- Remind: sends a friendly reminder to someone who owes you, once a day at most. “Remind all” does everyone who owes you in that group.
- Weekly reminder: in Group settings, turn on “Weekly reminder” and every Monday Kwitsy reminds anyone in the group who owes you. Only you can see this setting.
- What you hear about: Account → “Notify me about” (expenses, payments, reminders, group news), and “Email me” for emails.
- Mute a group: Group settings → Notifications → “Mute”. Just for you; Activity still shows everything.
- Monday summary: Account → “A summary email on Mondays”. Who owes you and whom you owe, only when something is open. Off unless you turn it on.
- Phone notifications: Account → “Notifications on this device” → “Turn on”. On iPhone, add Kwitsy to your Home Screen first (Share → “Add to Home Screen”) and open it from there: Safari can't show notifications otherwise. Blocked by mistake? Allow notifications for Kwitsy in your browser's settings, then come back.
Events: who's in, and who pays
Plan an event inside a group (a dinner, a weekend away), and everyone answers In, Maybe or Out. Costs added from the event are split between the people who are In. If someone drops out later, Kwitsy never changes a saved cost by itself: it asks.
- Plan one: open the group and tap the Events row under its name. It says “Plan an event” before the first one, then “Events · 2 upcoming” (events that haven't ended and aren't cancelled) or just “Events”. Add a name, the dates and, if you like, a place, an “about per person” guess and a reply-by date.
- Reply: “In”, “Maybe” or “Out”. Bringing someone? Add extra adults and kids to your reply. Changing only those numbers later doesn't change costs already added; it counts for costs added after. Whoever planned the event (or the group owner) can set anyone's reply: people added by name, guests and people with an account. Guests from the invite link reply only for themselves.
- Costs: “Add cost” on the event page splits the cost between everyone who is In, by shares: 1 for each person, 1 more for each extra adult and half for each kid. You can change the split before saving, as with any expense. A Maybe isn't included, and after the reply-by date a Maybe counts as not coming.
- “Booked, can't be refunded”: tick it on a cost that's already paid for and can't be undone (a villa, tickets). Everyone on it then keeps their share even if they drop out, and the page says they were in when it was booked. If some money comes back, use “Add a refund” on the cost: it's shared by the same people, by the same shares.
- “Check these costs”: when someone switches to Out, or is still a Maybe after the reply-by date, the costs they're still on that aren't booked appear on the group page and the event page. Choose “Take … off” or “Keep” for each. When someone switches to In, you can tick the earlier costs to add them to. Nothing changes until someone chooses, and every change shows in the expense's history.
- Cancel or delete: a cancelled event keeps its costs (add refunds for anything that came back). Deleting an event keeps every cost and balance too; they just stop being event costs.
- “Add to calendar” downloads a calendar file with the name, dates and place, never anyone's email. After a change, download it again: your calendar updates the same entry (and marks it cancelled if the event was).
Leave, archive, export or delete a group
It's all at the bottom of Group settings. You can leave once you're settled up; the owner can archive or delete the group, and anyone can export it.
- Leave: Group settings → “Leave group”. Settle up first, so everyone gets their money back. Your past expenses stay.
- Archive (owner): “Archive group” makes it read-only for everyone and hides it from your list. It's reversible: “Unarchive group” any time. Archived groups are listed in Account.
- Export: Group settings → Export → “Export CSV” for a spreadsheet, or “Splitwise format” to import it somewhere else.
- Delete (owner): “Delete group” removes it for everyone. Changed your mind? Restore it from Account → “Recently deleted groups” within 30 days.
- Change owner: the owner can tap “Make owner” next to someone in Group settings → Members. They need an account.
Remove a friend
Open your 1:1 with them (Friends → their name → “Split with …”) and tap “Remove friend” at the bottom. Settle up first: it only works when neither of you owes the other anything and nothing is scheduled or repeating between you.
- Only you: they disappear from your Friends list, search and suggestions. Nothing changes for them.
- Nothing is deleted. Your past expenses and payments together stay, and so does the activity.
- Still in a group with them? They keep showing on Friends through that group while you're both in it (the confirmation names it).
- Coming back: add them again and your 1:1 returns with its history. Add them by email or from the suggestions if they have an account, or by the same name if they haven't joined. If they add a new expense, payment or comment with you, it comes back by itself, so you never miss money owed.
- Leaving a 1:1: there's no “Leave” in a 1:1; “Remove friend” is the way to tidy it away.
Moving from Splitwise
Export the group from the Splitwise website, then in Kwitsy go to Account → “Import from Splitwise” and upload the file. You get a new group with the same balances.
- On the Splitwise website (their app can't export), open the group or friend, go to its settings and choose “Export as spreadsheet”.
- In Kwitsy: Account → “Import from Splitwise”. Pick the file and tell us which column is you. Files up to 4 MB and 2,000 expenses.
- Share the new group's invite link: your friends claim their names from it, and balances match Splitwise exactly.
Change your email or sign out everywhere
Both are in Account → Sign-in. “Change email” sends a link to the new address; “Sign out everywhere” signs you out on every device, this one too.
- Change email: tap “Change email”, type the new address and tap “Send link”. Open the link in the new inbox within an hour. Until then you keep signing in with your current email.
- Lost a phone or used a shared computer? “Sign out everywhere”, then sign in again on the devices you still use.
Downloading or deleting your data
Sign in at kwitsy.com/account. “Download all my data” gives you everything; “Delete my account” deletes it straight away. This covers the web and the Android app (it's the same account).
- Download: sign in at kwitsy.com/account → Your data → “Download all my data”.
- Delete your account: sign in at kwitsy.com/account → “Delete my account”, then confirm. It happens straight away.
- Can't sign in? Email contact@kwitsy.com from the address on the account and we'll delete it for you.
What's deleted: your name, email, photo, payment details and sign-ins, and every group only you use, with its expenses and receipt photos. What stays: in groups you share with others, your expenses stay so everyone else's balances still add up, but they show “Former member” instead of your name. Encrypted backups roll off within 90 days. See the privacy policy for details.
