How it works

  • By room size: shared space (kitchen, living room, hallway) is split equally, and each room is paid for by its size. With 12 m² and 18 m² rooms and 30 m² shared, each person pays for their room plus 15 m², out of 60 m² in all: 27/60 and 33/60 of the rent.
  • By features: everyone starts with the same share, and a private bathroom or a balcony adds a percentage you choose (15% and 5% to start with). A room with a private bathroom pays 115 for every 100 the others pay.
  • Equally: the rent divided by the number of people.

Amounts are worked out in whole cents (or the smallest unit of your currency), and the few cents left over by rounding go one each to the people closest to rounding up, so the shares always add up to the rent exactly. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Questions

What is the fairest way to split rent?

There's no single right answer, so pick what your flat agrees on. Splitting by room size is a common choice when rooms differ a lot; splitting by features suits rooms of similar size where one has a private bathroom or balcony; an equal split is simplest when the rooms are alike.

How is shared space handled?

Shared space is split equally between everyone, and only the private rooms are split by size. Leave it empty to split the whole rent by room size alone.

Does it matter if I use square metres or square feet?

No. The split only depends on how the sizes compare, so use whichever unit you measured in, as long as every room uses the same one.

What about bills like internet and electricity?

This calculator splits one amount. For bills that come every month, a free Kwitsy group can repeat them for you and keep a running tab of who owes whom.
