How it works

  • Equally: enter the bill before tax and tip, add tax and tip as a percentage or an amount, and the total is divided between everyone.
  • Item by item: add each item and tick who had it (a shared starter can have several people). Each item is split between the people who had it, and tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person had: if you had 40% of the food, you pay 40% of the tax and tip.

Percentages are worked out on the bill before tax and rounded to the nearest cent. The shares are counted in whole cents; the few cents left over by rounding go one each to the people closest to rounding up, so the shares always add up to the total exactly.

Questions

Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?

Customs differ, but tipping on the amount before tax is common, and that's what this calculator does. To tip on a different amount, enter the tip as an amount instead of a percentage.

How are tax and tip split when people ordered different things?

In proportion to what each person had. Someone whose items came to half the food pays half the tax and half the tip.

What if someone didn't order anything?

In the item-by-item split, someone with no items pays nothing. In the equal split everyone pays the same.
