A group trip expense app for trips in several currencies
A group trip has three money problems: who's actually coming, costs in more than one currency, and settling up without ten bank transfers. Here's how to handle each one in Kwitsy. It's free, with no ads and no limit on how many expenses you add.
Before you go: who's in, and who pays
- Plan the trip (or a dinner, or one day of it) as an event inside the group. Everyone answers In, Maybe or Out, and can add extra adults or kids they're bringing.
- Costs added from the event, like the house deposit, are split between the people who are In. Set a reply-by date and, after it, a Maybe counts as not coming.
- Someone drops out? Kwitsy never changes a saved cost by itself: it shows “Check these costs” and you choose to take them off or keep them. Money that comes back can be added as a refund.
- “Add to calendar” gives everyone the dates and place.
On the trip: any currency, the right rate
- Add each expense in the currency you paid in, from 57 currencies.
- For about 30 major currencies (euro, US dollar, pound, rupee, yen and more), Kwitsy fills in the European Central Bank's reference rate for that day, and it never moves later. For others, type the rate you got, or keep that money in its own currency.
- No signal in the mountains? Expenses you add offline are kept on your phone and sent when you're back online.
- Splitting dinners item by item, scanning receipts and wrapping up are covered in splitting costs on a trip.
After: settle in one currency, or each separately
- Each currency separately: pay back what you owe in each currency, for example euros to one friend and pounds to another.
- Everything in one currency: “Settle everything in …” and then “Move into …” converts what everyone owes into the group's currency, at today's rate or the trip's average rate. Everyone owed money is told the rate and amounts, and it can be undone until someone leaves the group.
- Kwitsy combines debts into fewer payments, with UPI, Pix, Venmo or PayPal links or a bank-transfer QR code filled in. Kwitsy never moves the money itself.
Questions
What's the best way to track expenses on a group trip?
Use one shared group that everyone can add to as they pay, in the currency they paid in. Settle up once at the end with as few payments as possible. In Kwitsy, friends can join from a link without an account.
How do we split costs only between the people who come?
Plan it as an event: everyone answers In, Maybe or Out, and costs added from the event are split between the people who are In. If someone drops out, Kwitsy asks before changing any cost.
Which exchange rate does Kwitsy use?
For currencies with a published daily reference rate (from the European Central Bank), the rate for the expense's date, filled in automatically. For others, the rate you type, or the money stays in its own currency.
Can we settle the whole trip in one currency?
Yes. Move what everyone owes into the group's currency at today's rate or the trip's average rate, then settle with fewer payments. Everyone owed money is told the rate, and you can undo it until someone leaves the group.
Is there a limit on how many expenses we can add?
No. Kwitsy is free with no limit on expenses and no ads.
